Every operator in the state will be required by CA and their local licensing jurisdiction to carry Workers’ Compensation for any employees issued payroll beginning January 1st, 2018. Learn more here. Owners with more than 15% ownership are excluded from this requirement
You do not need to provide Workers’ Compensation Insurance for 1099 contract labor employees, but be careful with 1099 employees as the Department of Industrial relations has strict rules as to who can and cannot be classified as an independent contractor. You can view them here.
